How To Fix the Code 22 Error Message in Device Manager

The Code 22 error is one of several Device Manager error codes. The Code 22 error will almost always display in the following way:

"This device is disabled. (Code 22)"

Details on Device Manager error codes like Code 22 are available in the Device Status area in the device's properties: How To View a Device's Status in Device Manager.



Important: Device Manager error codes are exclusive to Device Manager. If you see the Code 22 error elsewhere in Windows, chances are it's a system error code which you should not troubleshoot as a Device Manager issue.

Cause of the Code 22 Error

A Code 22 error is generated when a hardware device is disabled in Device Manager.

In most cases, a Code 22 error means that the device was manually disabled in Device Manager but you may also see a Code 22 error if Windows is forced to disable the device due to a lack of system resources.

Resolution

Enable the device. Since the most common reason you'll see a Code 22 error in Device Manager is because the device has been manually disabled, try manually enabling it.

Most of the time this will fix a Code 22 issue. Don't worry if it doesn't, however. All that means is that the Code 22 you're seeing was caused by something a bit less common.

Restart your computer if you haven't already.

There's always the chance that the error Code 22 you're seeing on a device was caused by a temporary problem with the hardware. If so, a restart of your computer might be all you need to fix the Code 22 error.

Did you install a device or make a change in Device Manager just before the Code 22 error appeared? If so, it's highly likely that the change you made caused the Code 22 error.

Undo the change if you can, restart your PC, and then check again for the Code 22 error.

Depending on the changes you made, some solutions might include:

Remove or reconfigure the newly installed device.
Roll back the driver to a version prior to your update.
Use System Restore to undo recent Device Manager related changes.
Reinstall the drivers for the device. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers for the device is one possible solution to a Code 22 error.

Important: If a USB device is generating the Code 22 error, uninstall every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers hardware category in Device Manager as part of the driver reinstall. This includes any USB Mass Storage Device, USB Host Controller, and USB Root Hub.

Note: Correctly reinstalling a driver, as in the instructions linked above, is not the same as simply updating a driver. A full driver reinstall involves completely removing the currently installed driver and then letting Windows install it over again from scratch.

Update the drivers for the device. It's also possible that installing the latest drivers for the device could correct the Code 22 error.

If updating the drivers does remove the Code 22 error, it means that the stored Windows drivers you reinstalled in the previous step were either damaged or were the wrong drivers.

Clear CMOS. If Windows had to disable the device, generating the Code 22 error, due to a lack of system resources, clearing CMOS might fix the problem.

Update BIOS. Another possibility is that a newer BIOS version could better hand off system resource handling to Windows, correcting the Code 22 error.

Move the device to a different expansion slot on the motherboard, assuming of course that the piece of hardware with the Code 22 error is an expansion card of some kind.

If the Code 22 error is due to a lack of system resources available for the card, moving it to a different slot on the motherboard could clear up the problem. This isn't as common a situation with newer hardware and Windows versions but it is possible and is an easy troubleshooting step to try.

Replace the hardware. A problem with the device itself might be the root cause of the Code 22 error, in which case replacing the hardware is the next logical step.

How to run MXIT on your computer

- The base for running MXIT on your computer is a program called mpowerplayer. But before you get to installing mpowerplayer, you need to install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) onto your computer. New versions of the JRE come out all the time. Download whatever version is available from here.

- The next step is installing mpowerplayer. Click here to do So.

- A prompt will appear asking you to either Save, Run or Cancel

MXIT Version 3

Once you have successfully installed mpowerplayer on your computer, getting MXIT V3 working is very simple. Just follow these steps:

- Launch mpowerplayer. You will see a default screen similar to the one below.

- Type mxit in the search box. Almost instantly you will see Mxit displayed [See pic below]

- Click on Mxit. V3 will now launch.

MXIT Version 5

Goto: MXit

- Click Download MXit
- Click Select Phone
- Select Nokia and click Accept
- Select 6230 and click Accept
- Click next to answer the annoying questions

- After you've answered the questions and typed in the in a code that is displayed in an image, you will be asked to select a version. Click Normal

- You will then be asked to save a *.jad file to your computer. Do so.

- Open mpowerplayer, click File -> Open

- Select the *.jad file you just downloaded and click Open.

MXIT V5 will now load in mpowerplayer!

NOTE: You have to repeat this process every single time you want to run MXIT V5 on your computer. This is due to the *.jad file expiring and becoming invalid after a given period of time.

If you want to use MXIT V5 without having to download the *.jad file each time, download MXIT V5.1.1 from here

- Open mpowerplayer

- Click File -> Open

- Select the MXit_V5.1.1.jar file you just downloaded and click Open

Fix Boot MBR in Vista

In Vista, the procedure to fix the master boot record is a bit different. You have to start up Vista in the Recovery Environment and then run the bootrec command. Here’s how.

1. First, load up the Windows Vista disc in your drive and press any key to boot from the disc.

2. Choose the language, time, currency, etc and click Next. Now click on Repair Your Computer.

3. Choose the operating system to repair and click Next. When the System Recovery Options dialog comes up, choose the Command Prompt.

4. Now type bootrec.exe and press Enter. This will rebuild the boot configuration data and hopefully fix your problem. You can also run the command with switches to fix just the master boot record (/fixmbr), the boot sector (/fixboot), or rebuild the entire BCD (/rebuildbcd).

Fix MBR in Windows XP

What is the MBR? MBR stands for Master Boot Record and it’s the first sector of your hard drive that basically tells the BIOS where to look for the operating system on your computer.

If, for any reason, the MBR becomes damaged or corrupt, then the operating system will be unable to load. You will normally see error messages like:



Error loading operating system

Missing operating system

Invalid partition table

These messages are definitely not fun, especially if you are not familiar with computers. Most people would automatically assume their computers are dead! However, that’s not true. Being in IT myself, these errors are actually preferably to other types of Windows errors. Why?

Well, it’s actually fairly easy to fix the Master Boot Record in XP and Vista. All you have to do is load up the Recovery Console and run a simple command. All of your data, applications, settings, etc are still intact on the drive and once the MBR is fixed, the computer will load normally.

So how can you repair your damaged MBR? Here are the steps to follow:



1. First, restart your computer with the Windows XP setup disk in the CD drive. If you don’t have your original disk, borrow one or download a ISO image from a torrent site.

2. When prompted, boot from the CD drive by pressing any key. If Windows loads automatically, you will first have to enter the BIOS setup and change the order of the boot devices to start with the CD drive.

3. Once the setup loads, you will see the option to press R to repair a Windows installation.

4. Once the Recovery Console loads up, you will have to type in a number that corresponds to your Windows installation. This is normally just 1. Press Enter and then type in the Administrator password

5. Now at the prompt, type in fixmbr. Your damaged MBR will now be replaced with a new master boot record and your computer should now be able to boot properly. Note that you may also want to run the fixboot command to repair the boot sector with a new one.

Also, make sure you only use these commands on a system with one operating system installed. If you have more than one operating system installed, fixmbr and fixboot could mess up everything.

It can happen that your MBR will be corrupted/damaged after a cold-start of your PC and then you need to know how to fix the MBR in Windows 7. Usually, you will encounter the dreaded error message: “Operating System not found“. There’s a really easy command that can be executed via the command line utility to fix it. How To Dual Boot Ubuntu 11.04 With Windows 7

Many Windows users who use Linux based operating systems for practice rely on VMware or VirtualBox for creating virtual machines. However, the problem with virtual machines is that many applications do not run due to compatibility issues. A better alternative can be to dual boot Linux operating system like Ubuntu with Windows. In this post we will tell you how to dual boot Ubuntu 11.04 with Windows 7.

To get started, you will require a Live Ubuntu CD, DVD or USB. If you don’t know how to make a live USB, check out out post here. Boot your system from the Live CD, DVD or USB and run the operating system. This will be a temporary session which terminates once you restart your system and remove the USB. Therefore, click Install Ubuntu option to begin the installation process.

This will start the installation wizard. In the first step, select your language preference and click Forward. You can optionally enable updates during the installation process and select third party software installation option. Click Forward to continue.

You will be showed three options including a dual boot option with an existing OS, erasing option to remove the primary operating system, and something else. Although you can select option three and provide manual configurations, but it can be a bit difficult for many users to understand the allocation of resources required to successfully use it. Therefore, select option one and click Forward for easily installing Ubuntu with Windows 7.

Your system will restart, remove the Live media device and boot from Windows 7. A wizard will appear which will allow you to perform the rest of the configurations. Select your labguage, disk drive (e.g. Drive D), username and optionally a password. Click Install to continue. (Note: do not select the drive containing Windows 7 (such as the C Drive).

This will initiate the installation process. It might take up to an hour or less for the process to complete.

Once the process completes, you will require rebooting your operating system. Select Ubuntu from the boot menu and allow the rest of the configurations to complete.

Enjoy your Ubuntu experience. You should be able run many of the features which virtual machines do not permit, such as Unity 3D (provided your hardware is good enough).

Merge two partitions with Windows Vista

1. Go to the Start menu and open Control Panel

2. Select the System and Maintenance option if you are using the Control Panel Home View and Administrative Tools if you are using the Classic View

3. In the Administrative Tools section, select Create and format disk partitions.



4. For Classic View users, select the Computer Management option and select Storage . When done, click Disk Management

5. When the list of your drive is displayed, choose the one with which you want to merge your partitioned drive with (e.g. disk D:) and select Delete Volume .

6. Hence, select your drive C: and the option Extend Volume . You computer will automatically select empty available spaces on your hard disk, and you can alter them if you wish to do so.

A cause of this instability is the OutlPrnt file. Outlook keeps its printing style settings in a file called OutlPrnt. Corruption of this file causes Outlook to hang or crash when printing.

Fortunately, the solution to this problem is simple. Just follow these simple steps:

- Close Microsoft Outlook

- Browse to the locations of the OutlPrnt file and rename it to OutlPrnt.old

- Then start Microsoft Outlook and test printing. It should work just fine!

The OutlPrnt file can be found at the following locations:

Windows Vista and Windows 7

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook\

Windows XP

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

Step 1 – Change The “LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy” Registry Key There is a way to work around the issue and this is by changing the value of the ‘LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy’ registry key on your Windows Vista computer to make sure that full credentials are passed between both Windows Vista and XP. To do this follow these steps:

1. Open the Start menu and enter the regedit command in the Start Search Box.
2. In the Programs list, select regedit.exe to open the Registry Editor window. 
3. If you get prompted then give the administrator password to continue or select Continue to confirm.
4. In the registry editor window search for the following registry key:
5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Policies\System
6. If the ‘LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy’ entry is not in this registry key, then follow these steps to add it and set its value:

1. Open the Edit menu and point to New and select the DWORD VALUE command.
2. Type LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy and then click OK.
3. Right-click on the LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy key that you have just added and select Modify.
4. Type the number 1 in the Value Data box, click OK.
5. Exit the Registry Editor window and restart your computer.

Install a Windows 7 Language Interface Pack

If you have Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium or Business, or if you have the Windows 7 Starter edition you cannot install a Language Pack, also known as a MUI or Client Language Pack, as explained in the first article of this series. However, any Windows 7 edition permits the installation of one or more Language Interface Packs (LIPs), which have only the most commonly used parts of the Windows 7 GUI translated, yet are limited to non-major languages.




Which Localization of Windows 7 do I have?

Before you set off to install a LIP in a given language make sure your Windows 7 computer has the prerequisite parent or base language installed, as explained in Bright Hub’s article Understanding Windows 7 Language Packs: Introduction and Architecture. To find out which localization of Windows 7 you have, go to Start Search and type msinfo32. In the right pane of System Information / System Summary check the value of the item Locale.

Windows 7 Language Interface Pack Installation

1. Go to Microsoft Download or follow our link.

3. When the download completes select Open, then click Allow. On the next screen click Next.

Determine Who and When Someone Logged into a PC

Has someone been logging onto your PC while you're not there? In this article, we explain how to determine the time, date, and type of log on for someone logging into a Windows XP and Vista computer from the point of view of a home user.

Why Audit Logon Times?

As a home user, you may be interested in knowing if anyone is using your computer while you're away. Using the Security Event log is a powerful and easy way to track this information. Base installs of Windows XP and Vista don't have security logging turned on by default, so this article will walk you through enabling auditing and interpreting the results.

Windows XP - Enable Security Auditing

The first step is to make sure you have security auditing enabled on your PC.

1. Go to Start → Run
2. Type "secpol.msc" in the Run Window. Hit ENTER.
3. The Local Security Settings Window should open.
4. In the left-hand window browse to Security Settings → Local Policies → Audit Policy.
5. In the right-hand window double click the "Audit logon events" policy.
6. In the properties window that opens, select both the "Success" and "Failure" checkboxes.
7. Click OK.
8. Reboot your PC.

Windows XP - Viewing the Security Events

After your computer has rebooted you will want to verify that the auditing is working.

1. Open up the Security Event Log by going to Start → Settings → Control Panel.
2. Double click on Administrative Tools.
3. Double click on Event Viewer.
4. In the left-hand pane, click on the Security event log. You should now see several events appear in the right-hand pane.

When looking for logon times, you will want to look under the "Event" column for 528. You can then double click on the event and you will be able to see the date, time and user who logged in.

As you can see in the picture below, the user that logged in was "Administrator". The user logged in at approximately 8:26pm on 02/10/2009.

The other interesting piece of information you can glean from the event log is the type of logon - was it someone unlocking your machine, logging in remotely, or logging in directly at the console? In the screenshot below, you can see the logon type was "2". Using the table below, you can see this type of logon corresponds to a logon at the console.

Common Logon Types:

2 - The user logged in at the console

7 - The user unlocked the computer

10 - The user logged in remotely - via Remote Desktop or Remote Assistance

Windows Vista - Enable Security Auditing

The process for enabling security logging on a Windows Vista machine is similar to that of Windows XP.

1. Click on the Vista Start button.
2. Type "secpol.msc" in the Start Search menu. Hit ENTER.
3. The Local Security Policy Window should open.
4. In the left-hand window browse to Security Settings → Local Policies → Audit Policy.
5. In the right-hand window double click the "Audit logon events" policy.

Note: You can enable auditing on the "Audit account logon events" policy, but this will only have an effect on computers joined to a domain. This is not needed for most home users.

Windows Vista - Viewing the Security Events

1. Open up the Security Event Log by going to Start--> Control Panel.
2. Double click on Administrative Tools.
3. Double click on Event Viewer.
4. In the left-hand pane, click on the Security event log. You should now see several events appear in the right-hand pane.

When looking for logon times, you will want to look under the "Event" column for 4624. Note that this is a different Event ID from the one Windows XP uses to track logon events. You can then double click on the event and you will be able to see the date, time and user who logged in. You may find it easier to look for specific events by using the built in Filtering options.

As is in Windows XP, you can determine how the user logged into the computer by examining the Logon Type. The logon type "codes" are the same for both Windows XP and Vista.

Common Logon Types:

2 - The user logged in at the console

7 - The user unlocked the computer

10 - The user logged in remotely - via Remote Desktop or Remote Assistance

Error 651 Modem PPPoE Broadband Internet Connection

• Reset TCP/IP Settings.
• If using a Laptop, make sure the wireless switch or button is turned on.
• Replace the RAS PPPoE driver:
1. Open a Command Prompt as Administrator. 
2. Select all the code below, then right click it and click Copy:
3. TAKEOWN /F "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\raspppoe.sys"
ICACLS "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\raspppoe.sys" /grant administrators:F
4. Right click in the Command Prompt window and click Paste.
5. Press Enter.
6. Once it has finished, close the Command Prompt.
7. Go to the following folder:
   C:\Windows\system32\drivers
8. Rename the raspppoe.sys file to raspppoe2.sys
9. Right click on the following file and click Save Target As / Save link as:
   Vista RAS PPPoE Driver.
10. Save it in the C:\Windows\system32\drivers folder.
11. Restart the computer.
• If using a Modem, obtain the latest driver.
• Reset your router.
• Re-install your network card drivers.

Fixing Windows Error 0x80070002

The 0x80070002 Error

While updating windows, it is possible to receive the 0x80070002 Error. As a result the update process will not be completed, and your computer will not be able to transmit files. The reason for your computer receiving the 0x80070002 Error is due to it not having all of the files that should have been transmitted when updating your software. This is an initialization error that occurs after files have been downloaded, and extracted to the computer.

How to Fix the Error

To fix the error manually, it will be necessary to remove all of the files partially downloaded, and try again to update your Windows files.

1. On the Windows desktop, press Start, and when the menu opens up,

2. Press Run, and input the following command “services.msc”

3. In the Run box, type "services.msc", and press "Enter".

4. This will open the "Local Services" window.

5. In the Local Services window find the name “Automatic Updates” and right click.

6. On right click, scroll down and press “Stop”. This will cause the Automatic Updates to pause to correct the situation. Do not close the Local Services window.

At this point you can go to the "Software Distribution" folder and delete its contents, or give the folder another name. It is advised that you just rename the folder,

7. To do this go to the Windows desktop and press “Start” then press “Run” when the menu opens.

8. Input the “cmd” command into Run, and the computer will take you to the DOS prompt.

9. At the DOS prompt type in this command “cd %windir%” (without the quotes), and press Enter.

10. You should now be in the Windows directory.

11. At the Windows directory, input “ren SoftwareDistribution SoftDisTemp” and hit "Enter". This will rename the Software Distribution folder to the new name of SoftDisTemp.

12. Type "Exit" and hit "Enter" to close the DOS window.

13. Now go to the "Local Services" window and right click "Automatic Updates" to restart it.

14. Try updating Windows files again.

Antivirus scanning for Outlook 2010

Scanning Outlook files

If you plan to use antivirus software to perform file-level scanning, you must make sure Outlook is not running during the scan. This is especially true for Outlook Data Files (*.pst) and Offline Folder files (*.ost), because they are the most frequently-accessed Outlook files. If you plan to perform file-level virus scanning while Outlook is in use, be aware that data corruption issues might result.
The same applies to other Outlook files such as *.oab (Outlook address book files), *.nk2 (Outlook nickname files), *.srs (Send/receive settings files),*.xml, outcmd.dat, and Outlprnt, although the possibility of this occurrence is significantly reduced because these files are accessed far less frequently.

Scanning email messages

Whether or not you scan *.pst, *.ost, and other Outlook files directly, we recommend that you scan email messages. You can scan email messages on either the email server or the Outlook client.

• To scan email messages that are on an email server you must use antivirus software that was developed to scan incoming and outgoing e-mail.

• To scan email messages that are on the Outlook client, use antivirus software that loads an Outlook add-in to scan email and other Outlook item types directly within Outlook.
